Wellspring article, RZIM Newsletter 2009

by Naomi Zacharias

Having just returned home from the last trip, I find myself in a place that is a little hard to describe. I sit at dinner with friends eating sushi, and when they ask how things are going I don’t really know what to say. If I do begin to talk about what is on my mind, they begin to shift uncomfortably and I am aware that I am bringing the mood down to an uncomfortable place that seems depressing. The conversation shifts, but inside I have not moved. It seems like only hours ago I was standing in an IDP camp in the northern part of Pakistan and I cannot bring myself all the way home.

Bombay Teen Challenge, November 2008

We boarded our eighth flight in twelve days. We had seen twelve projects in four cities, missed a flight, were delayed by many, traveled hours over bumpy roads, negotiated our overweight luggage, found lost passports, and passed medications to whomever was sick at the time. There were six of us, ranging from 16 to 58 years old, so conversations went from dating boys to church history in the span of the appetizer course.

We often have the privilege of hearing reports of how lives are changed and hope is restored through the projects supported by Wellspring. Bombay Teen Challenge is one of these projects, serving in the Red Light District of Mumbai, India. BTC recently had a wonderful opportunity to visit the US. The following is a portion of the report from their trip:

Most of you will remember one of our benevolence recipients in Cape Town, South Africa who Wellspring sponsored going to chef school after her rescue out of prostitution. She wrote at the time of her graduation that she felt like the horse in "Seabiscuit", being given a second chance by someone who believed in her not just in word but in deed. This young woman graduated at the top of her class and has been working in a hotel, proving herself an exemplary chef and employee. Today we received a fax copy of a "Certificate of Excellence" awarded to her. The Certificate read, "...for outstanding performance and lasting contribution..." We rejoice with her and thank God for the remarkable transformation that has taken place.

Home from Home

Currently operating six foster homes in Cape Town, South Africa to AIDS-orphaned and HIV+ children, Home from Home is launching an expansion project which will take them into the new area of Hawston, about an hour away from Cape Town. Each home provides full time care to six children under the direction of a house mother. The children are provided medical care and education as well. Home from Home has also opened a new house in Goodwood where children are currently being transferred from a local orphanage.

Guild of Service

Wellspring is moving forward with two new projects in support of the Guild of Service which operates a shelter home for widows in Vrindavan, India. "Ma Dham" is a facility on 2.6 acres of land providing housing, a medical center, worship center, and land for farming. Wellspring will be supporting their need for Netlon mosquito netting on all the windows along with bed linens, pillows, pillow covers and bath linens for each of the residents. We are also funding a Reverse Osmosis water treatment system which will give them pure, fresh 'sweet water' for drinking, cooking, bathing, and gardening. The well water currently in use is very saline, and the pump is difficult for the women to use. The new RO treatment system has been a critical need for the facility.

Benevolence Initiative

Wellspring has been made aware of a woman in Manipur in need of housing. Manipur is in one of the poorest areas of India, very near the border of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma). The people still live in tribal village communities and this single mom raised seven children alone after her husband left her in desperately poor conditions. She is a Godly woman who has been a tremendous influence for Christ in her village. One of her daughters told us, "My Mom has swollen knees from praying her children into the Kingdom." The land has already been purchased and given to her; construction estimates are about three to four months on the house itself. We continue to be amazed at the opportunities God places before us and thankful for His continued hand of blessing on Wellspring.

Scarlet Cord

Scarlet Cord operates in the Red Light District of Amsterdam, providing rescue and rehabilitation to women forced into prostitution. Scarlet Cord is also continuing their work of prevention education with excellent results. They are now moving forward with an expansion project which will provide housing for women coming out of the Red Light District as they go through rehab, counseling, educational and household management training. This is an intense 18-month program in which the women have an in-home mentor as they learn new life skills and prepare for the freedom and responsibility of an independent life.

Peermade Development Society

Wellspring is in the early stages of support for a new project in southern India. Peermade Development Society (PDS), formed in 1980, is launching a new program to provide Ayurveda Therapist training (oil massage therapy) to marginalized youth in the Idukki District, Kerala. This is a comprehensive training program, for only 20 women and 20 men per year. Wellspring is support the work of PDS by funding the training costs of 20 women. This division of PDS operates a hospital and research centre, pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, and offers franchise opportunities worldwide which in turn provide job opportunities for therapists who have completed their training. For the villages in and around Kerala, PDS operates a medicinal plant conservation and cultivation program that provides work for village farmers and their families.

India

We have just returned from 8 days in India. This was a physically and emotionally challenging trip. We met with an organization in Delhi that provides shelter for widows living in Vrindavan. They have one new facility and one much older, rented facility that although run-down is significantly better than the alternative these women face -- living on the street or in the temple, where they are abused in every way imaginable. The women have a precious sweet spirit and are deeply appreciative of the work being done on their behalf.

Bombay Teen Challenge

In Mumbai, we spent 1 ½ days with Bombay Teen Challenge, an existing project ministering to women and children in the Red Light District through clinics, shelters and homes. BTC cares for approximately 200-300 women per month and houses approximately 150 children. Wellspring has partnered with BTC for 4 years and the work they are doing is amazing. The needs are painfully real and the recipients are seeing the compassionate servant heart of Jesus through the work of BTC’s director and his staff.

FAAST

Wellspring is partnering once again with FAAST (Faith Alliance Against Sexual Trafficking). Last year, we funded a curriculum development, "Hands that Heal" to train caregivers of trafficking survivors in their very specialized areas of need. The material has been so well-received that it is now being translated into several languages to be used in trafficking "hot spots" all over the world. Wellspring is funding two of these translation efforts. One translation will be into Mandarin Chinese, the other translation into Khmer. Both of these will be used in the Yunnan Province of China, one of the most vulnerable areas in China for trafficking and exploitation. The anticipated project completion date is November 2008.

Middle East

Two new project sites in Jordan and Syria are Iraqi refugee clinics operated through the local churches and we are excited about the opportunities to support their work. The focus of the clinic in Jordan is on a food coupon program, providing 200 refugee families the opportunity to buy some of their weekly staples such as tuna, powdered milk, processed cheese, soap, detergent, tea, rice, and sugar at discounted prices.
