Overview
Bombay Teen Challenge (BTC) began in 1990 when Mr. K. K. Devaraj, its founder and executive director, came to Mumbai, India, with a passion to reach the young generation that was ensnared in drugs, gangs, and prostitution. Today, BTC is one of the largest NGOs working in the field of Health and Education. Their work includes the rescue and rehabilitation of women involved in the sex trade industry and children at risk.
Need
In response to the high number of women in forced prostitution, BTC established a women’s health clinic for victims of the commercial sex trade, many of whom suffer from life-threatening illnesses, including HIV. The clinic operates in the red-light district of Mumbai and provides emergency treatment, medical tests, and ongoing anti-retroviral treatment for women currently in or rescued from forced prostitution.
The Project
Wellspring currently partners with BTC by providing $22,000 for anti-retroviral and nutritional treatment for ten women who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
