Overview
Measuring as high as 9.0 on the Richter Scale in some areas, the tsunami that struck Asia Pacific on December 26, 2004 left entire villages and communities devastated along the coasts of India. In the weeks that followed, the Indian government granted World Vision of India, a consistent source of support for India since 1962, jurisdiction over emergency relief efforts in 11 tsunami affected districts, and a total of 45,000 families. Wellspring International and World Vision India joined efforts to replace these lost items for 500 children in an effort to provide personal support and encourage their continued education.
Need
While the government ordered free education and provided textbooks for children affected, families still needed to replace notebooks, uniforms, and supplies for all of the children in their home.
The Project
Wellspring International replaced school uniforms, textbooks, school bags, and supplies for 500 children living in identified villages along the coast. These items were lost in the tsunami, and once provided, the children could once again attend school. World Vision provided the on sight expertise, management, and oversight to ensure the integrity and success of the effort.
