United in Diversity

This project has been completed.

In continued tsunami relief efforts, Wellspring is working with the Indonesia based organization, United in Diversity, to provide Food Aids Relief for 18 villages on the island of Nias. This will lend basic needs aid to 5,505 people still recovering from the December 2004 tsunami and subsequent earthquake the following March. The tsunami caused tremendous devastation, and the earthquake, with a magnitude of 8.7, resulted in the collapse of most remaining structures, as well as greater loss of life and quality of life for those who survived. Although the emergency stage has passed and reconstruction is taking place, unemployment is at a record high, and the people still struggle to feed their children.

In this project our efforts will not only contribute to the revitalization of Indonesia’s economy but also bring a practical healing touch to the people. Each food package distributed will be 40 pounds and consist of rice, milk, coffee, crackers, sardines, cooking oil, tea and other necessary items. Through a lengthy and thorough interview and investigation process, individuals in need have been identified, the urgency of the need prioritized, and coupons delivered accordingly.

On April 6, UID will launch the Wellspring sponsored effort and deliver the packages to the families in person. On this day, recipients will exchange their coupon for one package and receive provisions necessary for health and quality of life.

While the road to recovery will be long for the residents of Nias, this project will provide interim help while long-term solutions are underway.
