LITTLE DROPS

THE NEED

A sad sight on the streets of Chennai, India, is the number of elderly homeless and destitute. They may have no family to care for them or they may be neglected by family, left without any kind of support system to care for their physical, emotional, and healthcare needs. Hungry and homeless, they endure illness, widow discrimination, abuse, and severe physical affliction from life lived on the streets.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Little Drops was founded in 1991 by two childhood friends who chose to leave their successful business careers to care for the elderly. Little Drops chose to give the elderly dignity in their life as well as in their death by providing a home and complete care for their life, and proper burial upon their death.
The home was dedicated by Mother Teresa. Today, six shelters provide holistic care for 800 elderly men and women.

The mission of Little Drops is to provide care for the neglected and destitute elderly, and to protect widows and abandoned elderly women. Through permanent housing, nutritious meal provision, and onsite clinic and medical treatment, Little Drops offers safety and security, as well as initiatives such as gardening to engage the residents and provide a natural therapy.

In addition, Little Drops manages a school called Little Angels for local village children. The children and the elderly have served to enrich and enliven each other’s lives, providing a beautiful life and energy on the campus for the elderly.

THE CHALLENGE

After two years of research and investigation, Wellspring International had the privilege of purchasing five acres of beautiful land, financing construction of a facility that houses 287 residents, a private well system, fully staffed clinic, and facilities for Little Angels and Little Drops second home. This home provided one-level housing for elderly residents with mobility limitations, opportunity for separate care for terminally ill residents and those with contagious diseases, and an expansive burial facility. Since then, Wellspring has provided an annual grant to provide for all costs associated with running the home and necessary improvements such as generators, fencing, and a guard facility.

This year, Wellspring International aims to provide an annual grant of $167,803 USD to provide for all associated running costs.
