Clinic for Iraqi Refugees

Damascus, Syria

“The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?’ But the good Samaritan reversed the question: ‘If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Need

In response to the recent war in Iraq, approximately 1.2 million Iraqi refugees fled to Syria for safety, leaving behind everything they owned except the clothes on their backs. Without opportunity to obtain legal work, they live in instability with no country, no home, no access to education and no resources for healthcare.

The Opportunity

In 2006, a local church opened a fully staffed clinic to provide comprehensive medical care and dental services to approximately 300 patients every month. Open six days a week, staff includes a family doctor, cardiologist, internist, and two dentists. Services are offered for $1, or free of cost when a dollar is simply not an option for a family to spare.

The Challenge

Wellspring International has had the opportunity to provide two panoramic x-ray machines for dental care and has provided funding for the salary of a full-time lab technician for their on-site lab facility to enable careful, reliable, and timely testing and treatment.

This year we aim to maintain a grant of $5,000 USD for the technician salary.
